User Story - Volunteer Journey

Adapting personas, stories and journey tools to develop the volunteer experience as a strategic partnership, not merely as a labor source.

I am a lifelong volunteer. But all organizations don’t run their volunteer programs equally well. I wanted to create an asset for volunteer powered organizations to use while reviewing their programs.

This template allows service designers and stakeholders apply UX techniques to create a volunteer profile, understand their Jobs-To-Be-Done and refine their value to community members.

The user stories are taken from three personas deciding to volunteer their time at an organization. The first two columns, Motivations and Considerations, deepens our personas with user story statements and questions that people evaluate when deciding to invest their time into an organization.

The third column, Action, represents the possible pain points the volunteer and critical to their first impression and trajectory of their relationship.

The last column, Reflections, represents decision points at the conclusion of the volunteer experience. This leg of the user story determines the alignment between individual values, volunteer experience and organization’s mission.

Finally, the last row provides some sample questions and metrics to investigate the health of their volunteer program.
